What Is PT-141?

PT-141 is also referred to as Bremelanotide, a peptide that is believed to help address sexual dysfunction in male subjects.
It may also be helpful for women subjects with sexual arousal disorders.

PT-141 is being studied by Palatin Technologies and is given the tentative brand name Rekynda. The company is set to submit a New Drug Application to the FDA, with this medication mostly intended for females suffering from sexual dysfunction. The studies on this substance started in the early 1960s and continued through the 1980s. When Competitive Technologies of the University of Arizona gave the license of their findings to Palatin Technologies, they signed with King Pharmaceuticals to co-develop bremelanotide. After the Phase III trials, Palatin Technologies partnered with AMAG Pharmaceuticals to further complete the development and even help with its marketing pending the approval of the FDA.

How Does PT-141 Work?

During laboratory testing, it was determined that PT-141 works by activating the MC3-R and MC4-R melanocortin receptors, which are found in the central nervous system. This action makes PT-141 different from Viagra and other similar medications, as they work on the vascular system. PT-141 works directly with the brain and the rest of the nervous system.

However, there are also some side effects associated with PT-141. In the test subjects, it was observed that this peptide may cause flushing for about an hour. In other cases, it may also take libido to overdrive, characterized by abnormally long sexual desire and erections.

However, this substance is yet to be approved for human consumption. The knowledge around PT-141 is not yet complete so it is not recommended by the FDA as of this date. The use of this substance is purely for clinical purposes.
